“It’s inspiring how he works while carrying a full class load. Very impressive,” was Nujeen Zibari’s (pictured left) response when asked how her mentee, Alan Amedi (pictured right), has inspired her. Nujeen and Alan were connected through the KAMA Mentorship Program. Alan is a pre-med student and Nujeen is currently a medical student who plans to graduate with her medical degree this year.

1. Please tell us a little bit about your mentor/mentee.
  • Nujeen: My mentee is Alan from Georgia. He is a premed student excelling at finishing up undergrad while working. He plans to graduate in 2019. He plans on studying for the MCAT next year while building up his resume with research and other activities. He would like to go to medical school in Georgia.
  • Alan: My mentor is Nujeen. She is a 4th year medical student at the University of Texas at Houston. Her end goal is to be in pediatrics. Nujeen is very easy to talk to and great because when I am feeling like I can't do it, she's there to root me on.
2. What is the greatest lesson/piece of advice you learned from your mentor?
  • Alan: My mentor has taught me to keep an open mind when applying to schools and the necessary steps I need to take before applying.
3. How has your mentor/mentee inspired you?
  • Nujeen: It’s inspiring how he works while carrying a full class load! Very impressive.
  • Alan: She inspires me to hang in there and not give up on my journey to medical school. Hearing about how she is preparing for residency motivates me to reach that point in my career.
4. What is your advice to other mentors/mentees?
  • Nujeen: Everyone has a different story and different path! We all are on different journeys and will have different strengths. We are in a stressful field and sometimes we need to be reminded that we’re super awesome for being where we are already.
  • Alan: My advice to other mentees is to use their mentors! They are there to help and they do help. We can learn a lot from someone who has already gone through the medical school process.

The KAMA Mentorship Program hopes to connect physicians and students in order to increase the number of Kurdish physicians within the United States and Canada while aiding in their success. The mentorship program involves student pairs connecting undergrad and medical students as well as pairs between medical students and physicians as they progress through their medical journey.

If you are a current member of the KAMA Mentorship Program and would like to be included in a future Motivational Mentorships profile, please feel free to complete the application.
